camelCase and snake_case converter: uses and practical guidance

Every language and team has its own conventions for compound names: camelCase in JavaScript, snake_case in Python and databases, kebab-case in URLs and CSS, PascalCase for classes and CONSTANT_CASE for constants. Converting a name from one style to another by hand is slow and error-prone, especially with long lists of fields copied from an API or a spreadsheet.

The tool first splits the name into words. It recognizes spaces, hyphens, underscores and changes from lowercase to uppercase, and handles acronyms properly: XMLHttpRequest reads as XML, Http and Request. Numbers stay attached to the word that contains them. It then rebuilds the words in the style you choose. With the All option you see the five styles at once and copy the one you need. Accented letters and other alphabets are preserved.

Review ambiguous cases. An acronym such as ID may be written userID or userId depending on your team’s convention, and a name with numbers such as ipv4Address may split differently than expected. The tool does not know the language’s reserved words or check that the result is a valid identifier. Names are processed in your browser and are not sent to any server.

Consistency matters more than the specific style. Within a project, use a single convention per kind of name and document exceptions, such as acronyms. When naming API fields, keep in mind that another system may expect a different style: converting a list of fields between camelCase and snake_case when integrating two services is one of the most frequent tasks. Remember that renaming in one place does not update the places where it is used; after converting, find and replace carefully and run the tests to detect references left unchanged. When a name comes from a database column, an API response and a front-end component at once, convert all three through the same tool so the spelling stays identical across layers.

A practical check before using the result

Convert helloWorld to snake_case and the result back to camelCase: you must get the original name. Try XMLHttpRequest to confirm how acronyms are split and decide whether your convention keeps them uppercase.

Settings and limits

Enter one name or phrase per line and choose the style. Words are split on spaces, hyphens, underscores and case changes, including acronyms such as XMLHttpRequest. With the All option you see the five styles at once. Accented letters and other alphabets are preserved.

Frequently asked questions

How does it treat acronyms and numbers?

A run of capitals followed by a word is split (XMLHttp reads as XML Http). Numbers stay attached to the word that contains them.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.

Is my data sent to any server?

No. What you type or paste is processed in your browser’s memory and is not sent to any server. You can check it in the browser’s Network tab or by going offline after the page has loaded.
