Slug generator: uses and practical guidance

A slug is the readable segment identifying a page within a web address. Generating one from a title helps prepare consistent routes for articles, products and categories. The tool simplifies the supplied text into a separated form, but does not publish a page or check whether the address already exists on your site. The final choice should fit the route structure of your content management system and the way related pages are organized.

Start with a title that describes the main subject and avoid wording that does not help identify it. A shorter slug can be clearer when shared or read as part of a link. The transformation may normalize letters, marks and punctuation according to its rules. Inspect proper names, numbers and expressions whose meaning could change when simplified. Different titles can produce the same segment, so check for collisions before assigning the generated value to a page.

Do not supply an entire address when only the final page name is needed. Domains, query parameters and fragments serve different purposes. URL encoder handles values requiring a transport representation within an address; it is not intended to create an editorial page route. Changing the slug of a published page may require updated links and a redirect to preserve references that already point to the earlier address.

Review the result alongside the rest of the URL and consider how it reads without the original title. Choose stable conventions for singular forms, plurals and dates across a collection. A descriptive slug helps readers recognize a link, but does not by itself guarantee search rankings. Maintain a clear relationship between title and route, and consider external references before renaming an existing published address solely to change its wording.

A practical check before using the result

For a catalogue, compare slugs from similar titles before assigning routes. Punctuation differences can disappear during simplification, leaving matching segments. Define collision handling in the content manager while maintaining a clear route for each page. Consider whether a title’s date belongs in the address or whether the resource will be updated while retaining its URL. The generator neither manages those choices nor reserves paths. Test the complete link in the publication preview after configuring the page. For an existing route change, retain a map from old address to new destination so references and redirects can be reviewed systematically. A generated segment is one part of a publication workflow, not confirmation that the destination exists.

Settings and limits

Combining accents are removed, letters are lowercased and separators become hyphens. Unicode letters and numbers are preserved.
