Number PDF pages

Add page numbers with custom starting value and position.

Private: it runs in your browser and your file is never uploaded. How to check it

Add your PDFChoose where numbering starts, its initial value, format and position.

Enter 2 to leave a cover unnumbered. Earlier pages remain unchanged.

The sequence continues from this value: 1, 2, 3… or 5, 6, 7…

Position and appearance (optional)

The total counts only the numbered pages.

Page orientation is respected, including rotated pages.

Choose 8 to 24 points. 10 to 12 points usually works well on A4.

The total in “1 of N” counts numbered sheets. Check that the footer does not cover signatures or stamps.

Number PDF pages: uses and practical guidance

Numbering PDF pages adds visible labels that make references easier and help readers check whether a document is complete. It is useful for reports assembled from several files, study notes and supporting records. New numbers are drawn onto the pages. They do not automatically replace previously printed numbering or update the contents page. Decide in advance whether the cover participates and which value should begin the sequence.

The starting number and the first selected file position are separate concepts. A section might begin on the third sheet while receiving the label one. Prepare that correspondence before processing when numbering must match external references. Choose a placement that does not overlap signatures, existing footers or handwritten notes. A size that seems acceptable in a screen preview may be too small when printed, so inspect a page at its actual reading size.

Check the first label, the last label and at least one page with a different orientation. Inspect contrast over dark backgrounds and clearance from the printable edge. Complete reordering, deletion and insertion before numbering so that labels follow the final document sequence. If another numbering system is already present, make the distinction understandable to readers. Keep the source document and verify digital signatures separately: adding visible labels creates a modified PDF, and an existing signature should not be assumed to remain valid.

A practical check before using the result

In an assembled report, test one page with a footer and another with a table close to the edge. Choose a common placement keeping both readable and verify the first selected label’s value. If the cover is excluded, state that convention in delivery notes so a reference to page one is unambiguous. After numbering, avoid adding appendices without checking the sequence again. Labels correct in an earlier version may no longer correspond to the final document, especially when readers use them to locate evidence or follow an external index.

Continue your task

Download the result or copy the text before opening another tool. Then load or paste it into the next step; content is not transferred automatically.

Settings and limits

Choose first page, starting number, format and position. The total counts numbered pages.

Up to 120 MB and 500 pages per document. Output copies also support up to 500 pages. Encrypted PDFs are unsupported. Check links, forms, annotations and signatures after editing a document. Available memory may require smaller batches.

Frequently asked questions

How do I continue an existing sequence?

Change the starting number and use a format without a total. The total in “of N” formats counts numbered sheets rather than your sequence’s final number.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your file and result are processed locally in your browser. No account is needed.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, from your phone’s browser (Safari, Chrome…) and without installing any app. When it finishes, the file is saved from the browser itself: on iPhone it appears in the Files app and on Android in Downloads. With very large files the phone may run out of memory; try a smaller file or a computer.
