Watermark PDF: uses and practical guidance
A text watermark identifies a copy as a draft, sample or working document. Its purpose is visual: it communicates a status to the reader when the PDF is opened or printed. Keep the wording short and understandable. A single word such as “DRAFT” is often clearer than a long sentence stretching across tables, signatures and diagrams. Choose wording that describes the actual status of the copy you intend to distribute.
Adjust size, placement and transparency against the document’s real pages. A mark that works on white paper may disappear over a photograph or become distracting above small text. Inspect several different pages rather than judging only the cover. The form uses a standard font with a limited character repertoire. If the required symbol or branding cannot be represented as supported text, prepare an image and use Image watermark PDF instead.
A watermark does not prevent copying and does not replace document encryption or permissions. It also does not establish authorship by itself, since another person could add similar wording to a different file. Review the download to ensure the message remains readable without obscuring useful information. If you later add or rearrange pages, check that the intended marking is present throughout the final version. Preserve an unmarked source for future deliveries and verify existing digital signatures after modifying the PDF.
A practical check before using the result
To choose transparency, compare the same mark over paragraphs and a dark image. Ensure its message is recognizable without making underlying content difficult to read. A printed sample may reveal different contrast from the screen. For successive drafts, record the version separately so two files bearing the same label are not confused. A watermark describes copy status, but does not automatically organize revisions or replace a clear file name. Inspect the final exported mark, since a setting that looks suitable in the form still needs confirmation across the document’s different page backgrounds.
Settings and limits
Enter up to 60 characters and choose pages. The font supports common letters and punctuation, without emojis.
Up to 120 MB and 500 pages per document. Output copies also support up to 500 pages. Encrypted PDFs are unsupported. Check links, forms, annotations and signatures after editing a document. Available memory may require smaller batches.
Frequently asked questions
Are existing watermarks removed?
No. Another notice is added over the contents. A visual watermark does not restrict copying or printing.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your file and result are processed locally in your browser. No account is needed.
Is it free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, from your phone’s browser (Safari, Chrome…) and without installing any app. When it finishes, the file is saved from the browser itself: on iPhone it appears in the Files app and on Android in Downloads. With very large files the phone may run out of memory; try a smaller file or a computer.
