Sort lines
Sort a list alphabetically in ascending or descending order.

Your files are processed here, on your device
We do not send the contents of your files or text to any server: everything is processed in your browser’s memory. No account is needed, there is no daily quota and we use no analytics or trackers. Each tool has size limits to protect your device’s memory.
A connection is only needed to load the site. After that you can disconnect and the tools keep working (some previews may need the connection). Hosting may receive technical visit data. Favorites store only tool identifiers in this browser.
How we handle your data →How to use this tool
- Paste a list with one item per line.
- Choose ascending or descending order and sort.
- Inspect numbers and accented names; duplicates remain.
An example you can verify
Sort names, references or labels for easier lookup.
Example input
item10 item2 item1
Expected result
item1 item2 item10
Comparison recognizes numbers within text. Duplicates remain: use the dedicated tool to remove them.
Sort lines: uses and practical guidance
Sorting lines organizes a list of names, labels or references without moving each entry manually. A line break separates one item from the next. Before processing, check that one entry has not wrapped into two actual lines and that two entries do not share a line. The tool sorts complete text units. It does not interpret table columns or determine which part of a person’s name should be treated as a surname.
Sorting uses localized comparison with natural treatment of numbers inside text. For example, “file2” comes before “file10” in ascending order. Inspect entries containing digits, punctuation and accented letters to see how the actual list behaves. Natural digit comparison does not interpret dates, version numbers or quantities under every domain rule. Ascending and descending settings change direction, but do not select a column or correct inconsistent data representations. The ordering criterion should still match what the entries mean.
Duplicates remain because sorting and removing repeated entries are different tasks. Use Remove duplicate lines before or after sorting when a unique list is needed, depending on which original ordering information should be retained. Empty lines and leading spaces can affect presentation; clean them when they are not meaningful content. Keep a source copy if the original sequence expresses priority, chronology or another relationship that alphabetical arrangement would obscure.
Inspect the beginning and end of the result and locate an entry you know should be present. A correct sort retains item contents while changing positions. Shuffle list serves a random arrangement instead. For classification by fields such as date and surname, prepare structured data in an application where columns and types can be selected. This tool is intended for a complete text entry on each line, so use that structure when preparing input.
A practical check before using the result
To validate sorting, prepare entries with letters, numbers and punctuation occurring in the actual list. Confirm the observed ordering suits the final use before sorting hundreds of lines. Technical version strings or irregularly written dates may need prior normalization or sorting as another data type. Do not interpret the first entry as oldest or most important when only text ordering was applied. Also check that records needing to remain together were not separated. If groups must be preserved, sort each block separately rather than combining all its lines. Keep the source sequence for investigating unexpected output. A sensible classification follows the meaning of the entries and the criterion chosen for comparing them.
Settings and limits
Paste one item per line and choose an order. Comparison follows language rules and sorts numbers naturally: 2 before 10.
Frequently asked questions
Are repeated lines removed?
No. This tool sorts all lines and preserves duplicates.
Is it free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.
Is my data sent to any server?
No. What you type or paste is processed in your browser’s memory and is not sent to any server. You can check it in the browser’s Network tab or by going offline after the page has loaded.
