An example you can verify
Add or remove a percentage tax and separate net, tax and total.
Example input
Net 100 with 21% tax.
Expected result
Net 100.00, tax 21.00 and total 121.00.
To remove tax from a total, check that the net multiplied by 1.21 returns the original total.
VAT and sales tax calculator: uses and practical guidance
Adding tax to a price looks simple, but removing it from a total is where mistakes happen: 21% of 121 is not 21. If the total already includes tax, the net is found by dividing by one plus the percentage, that is, by 1.21. This tool solves both directions: from a net it calculates tax and total, and from a total it separates the net and the tax contained in it.
You type the percentage, so it works for VAT, GST, sales tax or any surcharge, and also for tips or commissions when the calculation is percentage-based. The tool does not know official rates or exemptions, which depend on the country, product and date. Check the applicable rate in the regulations or on your invoice before using the result.
Amounts are shown with two decimals. On a real invoice rounding may be done per line or on the total, and sometimes the law fixes the method, so a sum of lines may differ by one cent from the total calculated here. If you need to reconcile an invoice, calculate with the same method your invoicing system uses. Calculations run in your browser and are not stored.
The most common mistakes when working with taxes are three. The first is calculating the percentage on the total when it should be calculated on the net. The second is mixing amounts with and without tax in the same sum. The third is rounding too early: keep all decimals during the calculation and round only the final result. If you prepare a quotation, always state whether amounts include tax, because the difference between a price with VAT and one without can be large for someone reading it without that information.
A practical check before using the result
Run the inverse operation to validate: add the tax to the net obtained and check you recover the original total. With a 0% rate the net, tax and total must be consistent: zero tax and net equal to the total.
Settings and limits
Choose whether the amount is the net price without tax or the total including tax, enter the percentage and calculate net, tax and total. It works for VAT, GST, sales tax or any percentage surcharge: you enter the rate. Results show two decimals; the tool applies no official rates or legal rounding rules.
