What data a photo carries
A photo taken with a phone stores, alongside the pixels, a block called EXIF with the device model, date and time, camera settings and, if location was turned on, the GPS coordinates where it was taken. Some photos also add an XMP block with editing or authorship information.
That information travels with the file. If you upload the photo to a listing, a forum or your website without processing it, anyone who downloads the original file can read that data, even though it is not visible in the image.
How it is removed
Snipshed redraws the image in your browser and encodes it again, so the resulting file contains only the pixels. Before processing, the tool tells you whether the original had EXIF, GPS location or XMP, so you know what will be removed.
Orientation is applied to the pixels, so the photo does not rotate when the tag is lost. You can process up to thirty images and download them together in a ZIP.
What stays visible
Removing metadata does not hide the content. A license plate, a house number, a sign or a recognizable landscape still shows where you are. If the photo was taken at home, the background may give it away even without coordinates.
Re-encoding a JPG or WebP can cause a slight loss of quality. Choose a high quality if detail matters, and use PNG for screenshots, which are preserved losslessly. Some platforms remove metadata on upload, but relying on that is not safe.
- Load the photo and see which metadata the tool detects.
- Choose the format and quality.
- Process and download the clean copy.
- Load the copy again: it should report that it detects no EXIF or XMP.
Criteria for reviewing and delivering the result
If you publish photos regularly, make this step a habit: always process images before uploading them, especially if they show your home, your workplace or minors. Also check the file name, which sometimes includes a date or a place. And remember that removing metadata reduces the information traveling with the photo but does not replace judgment about which photographs are suitable to share.
A phone photo for a listing
Load a recent photo from your phone. The tool will show in the status which metadata it detects. Keep the original format and quality 85 and select Process image.
A copy is downloaded with the same pixels and without EXIF or location. The name keeps the original with the suffix clean.
Load the clean copy into the same tool: it should report that no EXIF or XMP is detected. Also check that the photo looks the same and has not rotated.
