URL encoder and decoder

Encode text for a URL or decode percent-encoded characters.

Private: it runs in your browser and what you type is never sent anywhere. How to check it

Your files are processed here, on your device

We do not send the contents of your files or text to any server: everything is processed in your browser’s memory. No account is needed, there is no daily quota and we use no analytics or trackers. Each tool has size limits to protect your device’s memory.

A connection is only needed to load the site. After that you can disconnect and the tools keep working (some previews may need the connection). Hosting may receive technical visit data. Favorites store only tool identifiers in this browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose component for a parameter value or full URL for an address.
  2. Select encoding or decoding and paste text.
  3. Inspect symbols such as &, / and + before placing the result in a URL.

An example you can verify

Prepare a parameter value without treating its symbols as URL separators.

Example input

a b/&

SettingsOperation: Encode. Scope: URL component.

Expected result

a%20b%2F%26

Select full URL to preserve : / ? & in an entire URL. Decoding does not convert + to a space.

URL encoder and decoder: uses and practical guidance

Encoding a URL or component represents characters that could otherwise be mistaken for address separators. Choose component mode for a parameter value or segment, and full URL mode when structural separators should remain. That choice matters because a complete address contains characters with specific roles. Those characters should not all be treated in the same way as a sentence placed inside one query value. Select the mode according to the location of the data.

An ampersand inside a value can look like the start of another parameter when inserted unencoded into a query. Component encoding represents it as data. Conversely, indiscriminately encoding all separators of a full URL can change how the address is interpreted. Prepare a sample containing spaces, accents and a relevant symbol, then inspect the chosen mode. Understanding the boundary between URL structure and component content prevents many unexpected results.

This converter preserves a plus sign as a plus sign. It does not automatically apply the form convention in which plus represents space. URL query parser handles that query interpretation. Decoding requires valid percent sequences and UTF-8; an incomplete percentage escape produces an error. A second decoding pass can also change the meaning of data already decoded once, so do not repeatedly transform a string without knowing its current representation.

Confirm that the result represents the same intended value before inserting it into the destination. Encoding does not establish that a link exists, is safe or belongs to an expected site. It does not open addresses or remove private query data. Slug generator applies a different simplification for editorial page routes. Retain the original and document whether the operation involved a component or a complete URL.

A practical check before using the result

For a search parameter, test a value containing a space and ampersand. Encode it as a component and verify the sign does not introduce another parameter when the address is assembled. Decode the sample and compare its original content. For a full URL, inspect retained structural separators. Before using an example in production, check which application stage already performs encoding, since doing it twice changes representation. Keep parameter name and value separate in documentation. If the destination still displays percent sequences, identify the interpretation stage instead of repeatedly decoding without a defined rule. A reproducible small example is useful for distinguishing content errors from misplaced encoding steps.

Settings and limits

Choose component for parameters or segments; choose full URL to preserve URL separators. + remains +: this is not a form decoder.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an invalid % sequence?

An error is shown without changing your input. Decoding requires valid percent sequences and UTF-8.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.

Is my data sent to any server?

No. What you type or paste is processed in your browser’s memory and is not sent to any server. You can check it in the browser’s Network tab or by going offline after the page has loaded.
