Base64 encoder and decoder

Encode UTF-8 text as Base64 and decode valid Base64.

Private: it runs in your browser and what you type is never sent anywhere. How to check it

Your files are processed here, on your device

We do not send the contents of your files or text to any server: everything is processed in your browser’s memory. No account is needed, there is no daily quota and we use no analytics or trackers. Each tool has size limits to protect your device’s memory.

A connection is only needed to load the site. After that you can disconnect and the tools keep working (some previews may need the connection). Hosting may receive technical visit data. Favorites store only tool identifiers in this browser.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Encode for text or Decode for standard Base64.
  2. Paste the full contents and retain any = padding.
  3. Check accents and line breaks in a round trip.

An example you can verify

Encode UTF-8 text or recover text from standard Base64.

Example input

Hello

SettingsOperation: Encode.

Expected result

SGVsbG8=

Base64 is reversible and does not protect secrets. Use Image to Base64 for an image file.

Base64 encoder and decoder: uses and practical guidance

Base64 represents bytes using text characters for systems expecting that encoding. This tool works with UTF-8 text, including accented words and emoji. Choose encoding for readable text and decoding for a valid Base64 string. The exact character sequence matters: spaces and line breaks in the original contribute bytes to the encoded value as well. Visually similar passages can therefore produce different output if their actual text differs.

The tool uses standard Base64 with padding, rather than the URL-safe variant. Their differences matter for tokens and parameters, so identify what the destination expects before copying a string. The converter is not designed to open binary files or interpret bytes that do not form UTF-8 text. A string encoding an image requires a different workflow even if it looks similar to Base64 representing a sentence.

Encoding is reversible and does not encrypt information. Anyone holding the string can attempt to recover its text without a secret key. Do not use the representation to hide passwords, personal information or other secrets on a public page. Base64 also generally expands data size, so it is not compression. Its value is transport representation and compatibility when a receiving system specifically requires that format instead of ordinary text.

Try a small example and decode your own output to confirm that the same text returns. On failure, inspect the alphabet, padding and source instead of assuming every similar looking block is valid. Image to Base64 creates a Data URL from an image, while URL encoder performs a different transformation for address values. Retain the UTF-8 specification when documenting an exchange so the receiving side knows how decoded bytes should be interpreted.

A practical check before using the result

For an exchange check, use a sample containing ASCII letters, an accented word and an emoji. Encode and decode within the same workflow, then compare the complete text, including final breaks. A receiver using another character encoding may interpret bytes differently even when the Base64 is valid. Document UTF-8 and the padded standard variant before exchanging values. A copied token may use another variant or contain binary data, so failure here does not necessarily imply corruption of its original content. Identify format first and avoid publishing real examples containing credentials or private information. Round trip testing verifies the intended text representation rather than every possible Base64 use.

Settings and limits

Choose encoding or decoding. Standard padded Base64 and UTF-8 text are used, including accents and emoji.

Frequently asked questions

Does Base64 protect my data?

No. It is reversible encoding, not encryption. Binary files, URL-safe Base64 and non-UTF-8 data are not supported.

Is it free, and do I need to sign up?

Yes, it is free. You do not need to sign up, create an account or install an app, and there is no daily quota: open the tool and use it. The only limits are file sizes, which protect your device’s memory.

Is my data sent to any server?

No. What you type or paste is processed in your browser’s memory and is not sent to any server. You can check it in the browser’s Network tab or by going offline after the page has loaded.
